The difference between single turn absolute value encoder and multi turn absolute value encoder

Absolute value encoders, due to their absolute uniqueness in each position, anti-interference, and no need for power-off memory, have been increasingly used in angle and length measurement and positioning control in the robotics and automation industries. The absolute value encoder determines the uniqueness of each position based on the mechanical position. It does not require memory, reference points, power outages, interference, and does not require continuous counting. When the position needs to be known, its position can be read.
Absolute value encoders are divided into two types: single turn and multi turn.
A single turn absolute encoder is a device used to measure the rotation angle, which can accurately determine the angular position of the rotating object relative to the reference point. The encoder has only one rotating disc with a series of coding grids engraved on it. When an object rotates, the encoding grid on the rotating disk interacts with the sensor to measure the absolute position of rotation. This type of encoder can only measure angles within a range of one revolution, and once it exceeds one revolution, it cannot provide accurate absolute position.
The multi turn absolute encoder has higher resolution and measurement range. It consists of multiple rotating disks, each with a coding grid. The design of these coding grids allows them to measure the absolute position of rotation relatively independently, providing a wider range of angle measurements. Multi turn absolute encoders can typically measure rotations of multiple turns and provide higher accuracy and resolution. They are suitable for applications that require measuring multiple rotations, such as robotic arms, aerospace, and other fields.
Advantages of single turn absolute value encoder:

1. Simple structure and low cost.

2. Suitable for applications that only require measuring rotation angles within a small range.

3. For measurements within one circle, it has high resolution and accuracy.


Disadvantages of single loop absolute value encoder:

1. It is not possible to directly measure rotation angles exceeding one revolution.

2. Unable to provide accurate absolute position information after more than one revolution.


Advantages of multi turn absolute value encoder:

1. It can measure rotation angles exceeding one revolution and has a wider measurement range.

2. Provide higher resolution and accuracy.

3. Suitable for applications that require measuring a wide range of rotation angles.


Disadvantages of multi turn absolute value encoder:
1. The structure is relatively complex and the cost is high.
2. More sensors and coding grids are needed, which increases the complexity of design and maintenance.
3. For small-scale rotation angle measurement, there may be an excess measurement range, leading to a loss of data accuracy.

The choice between a single turn absolute encoder or a multi turn absolute encoder depends on the specific application requirements. If only a small range of rotation angles need to be measured, and the cost and complexity requirements are low, then a single turn absolute encoder is a good choice. It has a simple structure, low cost, and high resolution and accuracy within a measurement range of one circle. This encoder is suitable for applications such as motor position control, robotic arm motion control, etc. that require measuring a small range of rotation angles. However, if it is necessary to measure rotation angles exceeding one turn, or if higher accuracy and resolution are required, a multi turn absolute encoder may be more suitable. The multi turn absolute encoder can measure rotation angles exceeding one turn, providing a wider measurement range and higher accuracy and resolution. This encoder is suitable for applications such as measuring the position of a turntable, controlling ship steering wheels, etc. that require measuring a wide range of rotation angles.
